El Laberinto del Fauno
Pan's Labyrinth is a movie I recommend to anyone who can stomach a bit of severe and shocking violence—though nothing on par with Apocolypto or other gory films—and doesn't mind reading subtitles.
It's a beautiful movie and a very intruging fairy tale. My only issue with it is that the English title is rather misleading. There's a big difference between a faun (woodland creature/spirit with goat horns and legs) and Pan himself (a faun-like god in Greek myths). In this story, we are introduced to a faun, not the lascivious deity.
Beyond that, this movie is visually and thematically amazing. Please go see it to keep encouraging directors to make movies like this. But don't bring your kids, of course. There's some scary stuff in this movie.

I really enjoyed the film, and I think it really was the right amount of explicit violence/gore. There were points when I definitely winced at the imagery, but that was definitely the point.
Frogs are just gross in general, also.
Saw it over the weekend. Great movie! Highly recommended. Co-worker saw it at another theater and reported that in the audience there were several children present whom she guessed were 8 years old and younger. So not a movie for kids in that age group!
No kidding, Lara. I don't know how anyone can miss that it's rated R, and with good reason.
They did not "miss" that it was rated R, friends.
If you go to the movies enough, you will see that there is a large section of the populace who doesn't understand how to take care of children.
They apparently also don't understand that they actually CAN get a babysitter if they want to go see an R-rated film.
I am reminded of when I went to see Serenity, and there was a kid behind me who was definitely in Kindergarten. He got scared and antsy during the PREVIEWS for other movies, like DOOM. Then during the first 10 minutes of the film, he uncomfortably said, "Mom, I don't like this, I want to go."
She of course, said what all mothers do to their children: "Shut up!"
Eventually, when a Reaver popped out, he started bawling and she took him out.
Seriously! She told her 5-year-old child to SHUT UP when he told her he was scared of monsters! Who are these people!?
